Lady Liberty Awaits, the Story of Liberty National

Filed under: by: golf clubs showcase

a one-hour special produced by PGA TOUR Productions, airs Saturday, August 22, at 5 p.m. ET on CBS and tells the remarkable story of Liberty National and how it came to host The Barclays, the first event of the 2009 PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.

Located on the western shores of New York Harbor, just 1,000 yards from the Statue of Liberty, Liberty National is a realization of the vision of father-and-son co-founders Paul and Dan Fireman. Viewers will be treated to exclusive interviews with both as they recount the amazing transformation process of the land and the never-before-told secrets of the nearly two-decade journey to hosting the world's greatest golfers.

The land where the spectacular 7,400-yard layout now sits was once home to rotting and decaying industry, a wasteland of pollution, a forgotten slice of coast along the Hudson River with stunning views of New York City and the Statue of Liberty. The golf course was designed by 1992 U.S. Open Champion Tom Kite and design partner Bob Cupp and features a combination of classic tree-lined holes with Scottish-style links. Both designers talk about the challenges and obstacles of cleaning up the land and creating a championship-caliber golf course from scratch.
