Top-seeded Nick Taylor of Canada pulled away after his opponent stepped on his golf ball, cruising to a 6 and 4 victory Wednesday in the opening round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links.

Craig Cyr had to penalize himself on the 10th hole, and Taylor took advantage to advance to face Brett Munson of Louisville, Ky., in the second round.

The second and third rounds will be played Thursday on the Jimmie Austin Golf Course on the University of Oklahoma campus.

Others advancing included 2008 Ben Hogan Award winner Rickie Fowler of Oklahoma State; 18-year-old Cameron Peck of Olympia, Wash.; and former Oklahoma golfer Philip Bryan, who's now an assistant coach for the Sooners.
