Anderson leads Girls’ Junior qualifiers

Amy Anderson was one of the few players who managed to move up the leaderboard on a cold, rainy day Tuesday at the U.S. Girls’ Junior in which many players moved backward.

Her second-round even-par 72 at the New Course at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., gave the Oxbow, N.D., native a two-day total of 3-under 141 and medalist honors in stroke-play qualifying.

Finishing in a three-way tie for second were Erynne Lee, the overnight leader and a semifinalist at last year’s Women’s Amateur, Jessica Korda, who made the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open two weeks ago, and Sarah Brown, a native of nearby Lopatcong, N.J.

Alexis Thompson, defending champion and the top-ranked player in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings, shot 69-76 to place seventh.

The cut came at 13-over 157 with eight players having to play off for the final five match-play spots.

The scoring average Tuesday was 80.68.
