Good Golf Putting Tips?

Amateur golfers think that putting is hard, but keeping some secret putting tricks up one's sleeves makes it an easy job. If you think so to, all you have to do is talk with golf pro to get these terrible ideas raided to dust. It is never so easy. Working for the entire day on the green, calculating carefully and then making the strokes may seem very easy on T.V, but it is really very painstaking.

Just having a few secret tips on your fingers will never make you an ace golfer. These tips are not magical, but they are surely the guidelines that you need to follow while you are practicing so as to make your mark. These tips are given below:

* You will have to know what your right spot of putter is in order to hit great putts. You can do this by just hanging and swinging your putter from your hand. Keep your fingers loose, and with the other hand, take the ball while you start tapping your shoe with the putter. Then work your way to the centre. Only when you hit the ball, the face of the putter does not twist, will you know that this is the right spot of the putter for you.

* The next best putting tip is building a stable base and taking the right stance. A lot of golfers do not make the best putting shots because they have a problem at the roots: posture. In order to build the right base, you have to take the putting stance at the doorway, with your hips touching the door jam. When you take your stroke, your hips should move away from the door jam. This way you will have less movement in your lower part of the body, which should always be the case. This is a very good technique, and to follow it, you can practice it anywhere, be it in your office when your secretary will not intervene, or in your home when you are alone in your room.

* Another thing you can do instead of standing in the doorway is to get close to a wall. You should not be touching it, so when you are making your swing, your hips must not brush against the wall at all. Your head should be straight too, and you must not break this posture. If your head rocks, this means you are not doing it right and you can start all over again.

* There is no need to use the expensive training aids. These tips are very inexpensive, and you can follow them anytime anywhere. Use a flat three foot putt when you are practicing. Line the strips on the range balls so as to maintain a straight lien as you putt them to the hole. The line must not widen up or curve in when you are putting. If it does, this means that you are not dong it right. While putting, the line has got be straight and nothing else.

These methods will put your right on the top spot while you make your impressive shots on the green and then get applauded by the watching audience!

What is a Right Sided Swing??

I have found some videos describing the Right sided swing and the differences to the Left sided swing (traditional swing). Many are unaware and some have misconceptions about it. Both types of swing are effective but I believe one makes more biomechanical sense than the other. There are a few videos in the series which I will upload over the next few days. You Have to Know About Your Tee Position

Do you have big problems teeing off the ball? Have you ever considered how detrimental bad tee position can be? Sometimes, its not the swing that's the problem. Quite often it can be the position you tee the ball up. We are going to look at some of the damaging effects of this and what you can do to ensure a smooth ride off of any tee you play off.

With the driver you are looking to promote an ascending blow to the ball. Accordingly, you want to tee the ball up higher than you would for any other club. There is often debate about how high exactly but the orthodox method is to have half the ball above the top of the driver. Some will say that you should have the entire ball above the club - for this it would be worth experimenting at the range. Its possible that a higher position is worth an extra 20 yards. I'm sure you wouldn't turn that down!

The fairway woods are used in a similar way to the driver. The ball should be on the inside left heel and approximately half the ball should be showing. You may want to lower it slightly if you are using a hybrid or higher fairway wood.

The irons are different in that you are looking to hit the ball just before the low point of the swing. This is what is known as 'hitting down on the ball'. When you connect the club face angle takes care of the loft of the ball. So to ensure you are in the correct position let the design of the club guide you. When you approach the ball lay the club down as it was designed and have the butt of the club pointing toward your belly button. You should notice that the longer the club the further toward your inside left heel the ball should be. As a guide the ball should be in the centre of your stance for your wedges, an inch further forward for 5,6,7 and another inch or so on for the long irons.

For the more consistent and confident amongst you alter the angle of your shots by moving the ball in your stance. Move it further forward to get more height and further back for a lower trajectory. This is only recommended for more advanced players who are looking to be a bit more creative in shaping their tee shots. However, take note of this as it gives you a guide to the effect ball position has on the flight of the golf ball.

Your overall aim is to find a consistent tee height and position. It then naturally follows that your tee shots will be more consistent. Go through these tips and experiment at the range. With the tee height you can then go away and mark your tees up for each club so you don't have to fiddle around on the tee when you're playing for real. You will gain more confidence and the tee shot will become a much more pleasurable experience.

Woods, no obstacle ahead

The number one ranked golf player Tiger Woods is ready to have his 16 states PGA Tour cup home. He's already put his stunning loss in the PGA Championship this month to Y.E. Yang behind him. The New Jersey Tour is undergoing.

"That night was tough, no doubt," Woods said of Aug. 16, when he was kept from a 15th major title by Yang. "It was disappointing that I didn't win, especially since I was hitting it so well on Sunday. But it's just like golf, you move on to the very next week, and I went home and took a few days off away from golf and didn't touch golf clubs after three straight weeks of playing golf just about every day."

The last major of the season was the third tournament in as many weeks for Woods. But the top seed in the playoffs and a five-time winner this year is refreshed and eager to go. Coming off reconstructive left knee surgery,Tiger Woods was mindful of his knee and purposely minimized his early season schedule to make sure he was fit for the end.

"It's worked," he said. "I feel great now. And that's the whole idea — to make sure that I was ready for this long haul at the end of the season."

A golfer's lifelong ambition

A golfer, now into his golden years, had a lifelong ambition to play the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Verde, Fla., exactly the way the pros do it.

The pros try to driver the ball out over the water onto the small green that is on a small spit of land. It was something the golfer had tried hundreds of times without success. His ball had always fallen short, into the water.

Because of this, he never used a new ball on this particular hole. He always picked out one that had a cut or a nick, as did many other “average” golfers when negotiating very challenging holes.Recently he went to Sawgrass to try again. When he came to the fateful hole, he teed up an old, cut ball as usual, and said a silent prayer.

However, before he could hit the ball, a powerful voice from above seemed to be booming out from the clouds, saying:“Wait! Replace that old ball with a brand new one.”
The golfer complied, with some slight misgivings, despite the fact that this same force seemed to be implying that he was going to finally achieve his lifelong ambition.
As he stepped up to the tee once more, the voice came down again:“Wait. Step back. Take a practice swing.”

So he stepped back and took a practice swing, certain now that this heavenly force was going to make his dream come true.

The voice boomed out again:“Take another practice swing.”

Dutifully, he did. He stopped expectantly and waited …A long silence followed …
Then the voice again:“Use the old ball.”

Garcia Led The First Round of The Barclays

Sergio Garcia is the most brilliant star in the first round of The Barclays at Liberty National. He surged into the lead along with Steve Marino and Paul Goydos.

The Spaniard secured his place in the 120-man field with a fourth-place finish at last week's Wyndham Championship - and he carried that form into Thursday's round, shooting seven birdies and bogeying only the final hole as he settled for a six-under round of 65.

That was matched by American duo Paul Goydos and Steve Marino, with four players one shot back on five under.

"Overall, it was a good, solid day," said Garcia.

"It's the kind of course that, if you play well, you can shoot a score - with the greens being a little soft like they are.

"But at the same time, if you're a little bit off, you can struggle a little bit. I managed to hit the ball well today, drove the ball nicely, hit a lot of good iron shots and made a couple of birdies here and there."

Webb Simpson, Frederik Jacobson, Heath Slocum and Charley Hoffman all recorded 66s - while Padraig Harrington continued his good run of form with a four-under, bogey-free 67.

England's Ian Poulter also had to settle for a 67 after bogeying the 18th, with David Toms on the same mark.

Harrington said: "I'm thrilled with it. I know that it's not leading the tournament or whatever - but before you head out on this golf course, you don't know what you're going to shoot.

"It really is a testing, intimidating golf course - and to break 70... if I can continue that this week, I'll be a very happy man."

Tiger Woods struggled off the tee and was left frustrated after shooting only a one-under 70.

The world number one managed only two birdies but believes he is still well in contention.

"As of right now, only six under is leading - so I'm sure it will be a little bit tougher, with the wind and the weather coming in. We'll see what happens," he said.

Phil Mickelson also shot a 70 - while English trio Brian Davis, Luke Donald and Justin Rose are tied for 73rd after two-over rounds of 73.

The Opening Day Of Johnnie Walker Championship

In this year's Johnnie Walker Championship, Scotland's Paul Lawrie, whose 10-year European Tour exemption for winning The Open ends this season, leads at Gleneagles after the opening day. He showed us his brand-new state.

Lawrie, 97th on the money list and needing to be in the top 115 in November to save his card, scored a five-under-par 67 as he began his latest bid for a first victory since the 2002 Wales Open.

The 40-year-old, still Great Britain's last winner of a major title, goes into the second round one ahead of a group which includes his fellow Scot Steven O'Hara and defending champion Gregory Havret.

It was a bad day, though, for two other European Tour stars of the past, Colin Montgomerie and Thomas Bjorn.

Ryder Cup captain Montgomerie lost two balls as he slumped to a 76 - he could now miss a fourth successive cut for the first time in his European Tour career - while Bjorn crashed to an 82.

This is the Dane's first event since the start of last month. He has been suffering from dizziness and extreme fatigue and even underwent a brain scan during his lay-off.

"I'm just feeling out of sorts, but that was a bit worse than I thought it would be," Bjorn said before going off for a drug test.

Lawrie did not drop a stroke all day and the highlight was a 40-foot putt for an eagle on the long ninth.

At The Open last month he sought help from Padraig Harrington's coach Bob Torrance and since then has made the journey from Aberdeen to Largs - three hours each way - five or six times.

"And I hate driving," Lawrie said. "I looked into hiring a helicopter, but it was ?,000 for the trip and I thought that was too much.

"I get up at 4.30am to avoid the Glasgow traffic and be there for 7.30am and then we have four and a half hours hitting balls before I go home.

"The first time I saw him, Bob said he didn't see it as a major overhaul, but David Leadbetter once said that swing changes take 10,000 balls or 10,000 hours - I can't remember which.

"I didn't do what we worked on the first time I played. He didn't give me a talking-to, but said we are a team and we have to work this out together.

"I'm hitting more balls and swinging in my room to get the feeling and it feels fantastic.

"It's been too long since I won. I've always wanted to work with him, but it's never been been the right time. I think it's the right time now."

A basic chip - Do you know how to do it?

My short game, particularly around the greens, had a mini-revival lately after I paid my coach a visit.

He looked at my chipping, pitching and flopping and noticed 2 very obvious flaws in my set-up that I was unaware of - I was standing a little too far from the ball and my hands were too low and it prompted a very inside path on the takeaway. Becos of this, on the thru-stroke, I had to use a lot of hands to square the club face and it sometimes will not work when the timing is off.

As usual after correcting it, I felt like I was going to shank or duff every chip standing so unusually close to the ball and having my hands high again. However, I trusted his words and went about practicing it more, 2hr every session for a few weeks.

After reworking on the set-up, I have renewed confidence in getting my chips closer and sometimes, even the confidence and feel of holing certain straight forward ones.

A lot of times when I play with beginners or higher handicapped players, the chipping motion or shot is something they are most unfamiliar with. From set-up to the stroke, they have all sorts of funny habits working against them due to the lack of knowledge. Some even putt when there is like 20yds of long fringy grass in between the ball and the green. Many just do not practice it enough as most places in Sg do not offer good short game facilities to practice.

Here is a very good video I found on youtube that can help every individual - from beginners who have no clue or have not had lessons on the shortgame, to the experienced and good players who sometimes get lazy or forget the basics. He explains the basics very clearly and demonstrates the technique well.

Also, its good to ask your pro to take u out to spend more time explaining the short game to u instead of just being a range rat.

7 tips to healthier Golf

Read this and sharing with all Brudders and Sisters...especially me being guilty of #2 below:

1)Walk the course as often as you can, carry your golf clubs while you’re at it.

Playing an 18 hole round while carrying your clubs burns almost 2,000 calories, this is the equivalent of almost two Big Mac meals from McDonalds, or nearly 9 beers – your body will thank you (just avoid eating crappy food on the course as well). In comparison, pulling your clubs kills over 1,500 calories and riding about 1,300. So really no matter how you play golf, you’re still getting some decent exercise.

2) What’s the most important thing in your golf bag?

It’s not your $500 driver… it’s your bottle of sunscreen. Spending 4+ hours in the sun is quite risky on a sunny day. Statistics say 90 percent of skin cancer cases are caused by the sun. Of that, over 20 percent are golfers. This is a rather skewed statistic as many factors can attribute to cancer, regardless; it’s not worth the risk. As an add-on, don’t forget your hat out there either.

3) Warm up before each round. Stretch and swing with a weighted club (or two clubs) for a good 5-10 minutes to warm your body up before hitting the first tee, not only will it get you in the golfing mood, it will also give your muscles and joints time to prepare for the physical activity to come. Common golf injuries occur in areas that respond well to stretching and warming up – elbows, back, shoulders, hands, wrists and hips – so be sure to take advantage of this.

4) Stop smoking, cigarettes and cigars. No matter how cool you may look, it’s not good for your body, your lungs and your stamina will also suffer. Not to mention, your playing partners, clothes and even the beer cart girl will thank you for not reeking up your general vicinity. I’m sure you all know the risks of smoking, so I’m not going to repeat them here.

5) Take some lessons, repeating a bad golf move or technique can lead to one of the common golf injuries listed above. Taking a couple of lessons from a professional can get your swing into better positions and help reduce the strain on your hands, wrists, spine, hips and shoulders throughout your swing.

6) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate – drink plenty of water and fluids on the golf course… and this doesn’t mean alcohol. Alcohol actually dehydrates you, hence the wicked hangover on those nights when you’ve had one too many. Stick to water or Powerade / Gatorade (diet if possible) on the course, juice is the next best thing - it will help rehydrate you, while not adding too many unnecessary calories. Furthermore, if you can, eat healthily on the course, stay away from hot dogs, burgers and fries and stick to sandwiches and granola bars.

7) When the weather looks dangerous, get off or the course or seek shelter, asap. Lightning is not something forth flirting with, especially with 14 metal lightning rods in your golf bag. Statistics say lightning strikes 400 people in the US per year. The most common time to get struck by lightning on the golf course is Sundays in the afternoon.

Can request to mark ball on fringe of green?

We were short of the green, on our approaches. I was about 8 ft from green and my flight mate was 5 ft directly in front of me. I was not feeling confident of chipping or pitching there and then, and i was really thinking of putting the golf ball in (fringe and green was quite flat). But the prob was my flight mate was on the line. So, juz curious as to whether can I ask him to mark his ball, and perhaps even shift the marker by one putter head length, as per on green?For that scenario, my flightmate flatly said cannot, and I dun wan to argue. Ended with a lousy chip and 2 putts. Thinking back, really may have a better chance to par if i putt in (properly)...

Golfing in the Haze

While driving to work today, I noticed how bad the haze was. Yes, we've been facing the haze for a while but it was quite awful today. I was on Nicoll Highway and could barely make out the Suntec buildings in the distance. This was of concern to me since I'll be playing in JB over the weekend (where the haze is supposed to be just as bad, if not worse) and also to our fellow golfers who will be playing at MBGC on Saturday. So, I wanted to share some suggestions* for those who expect to head out into the open while the haze continues to linger.

1. Heat

With the haze in the air, this creates a suffocating blanket of smog which prevents the heat from dissipating. As a result, the heat levels will rise as will humidity. While there may not be a lot of sunlight, it will be hot. I recommend drinking a lot of fluids and not over-exerting yourselves. If you feel out of breath, it's because the smog makes it difficult to breathe. Calm yourself down in the buggy. Stop for a while and resume when you feel more comfortable.

2. Skincare

Just because there's less sun (as it's hidden behind the smog), it does not mean that there's no sun. The sun rays continue to penetrate and as such, ample skincare is recommended. Sunblock lotion, wearing Skins (or similar material) and seeking shade whenever possible helps. Don't be a hero and march down each fairway thinking that the "shade" means reprieve from the sun's harmful rays.

3. Eyes

The particles in the air will cause irritation for your eyes. You'll notice that your eyes will start smarting and become more watery. I recommend using eye drops to help bring comfort. Try and avoid rubbing your eyes especially if you use a towel which is dirty. I've seen some golfers use the same towel to wipe their eyes as they do to wipe their golf clubs. Don't end up with an eye infection. Take care of your eyes.

4. Throat

Like your eyes, your throat may also suffer if it's too hot and dry. Make sure you consume lots of liquids. Coffee, tea etc should be avoided. Stick to water

5. Bacteria/germs etc

I was told that it is best to have a bottle of disinfectant with you (the small ones from Watsons don't cost much and can be very helpful) especially if you constantly wipe your sweat away from your face etc with your bare hands. The disinfectant is meant to cleanse your hands from bacteria/germs. Where do the bacteria/germs come from? Check out balls which end up in plugged lies, in the rough, in the water etc. You'll be surprised to see how much dirt they pick up.

Woods edges Villegas

The Atunyote Golf Club has witnessed the surging of Tiger Woods, who won the three holes after Camilo Villegas had a birdie at the 14th hole. Woods takes $230,000 home, and Woods takes the Notah Begay III champion home this Monday.

Begay won the final hole to pocket $70,000, while Mike Weir (FSY) was shut out for the second straight year.

The event, a collaboration between the Oneida Indian Nation of New York and San Manuel Band of Serrano Mission Indians of California, is an effort to aid the health of Native American youth and their communities. Begay, the only full-blooded Native American to play on the PGA Tour, established his foundation in 2005. It uses the sports of golf and soccer to promote physical fitness and wellness among Native American youth, who are plagued by obesity and diabetes.

Begay received a check for $750,000 for his foundation and Woods, his roommate in college at Stanford and his longtime friend, departed with the winning trophy, a piece of Pueblo Indian black pottery from Begay's home state of New Mexico.

It was a rare appearance by the world's top player, whose schedule leaves little room for such forays. Woods was glowing afterward, the stunning loss to Y.E. Yang (FSY) in the PGA Championship a week ago erased by a few golf swings for charity.

"Today was incredible, to come here and bring awareness to what Notah is trying to do," said Woods, who won five holes to three for Villegas. "It's great to see what he's doing, to put his heart, soul and passion into something like this and bring this many people together to help them understand and educate the public. I'm just so proud of him as a friend. We've been through a lot together."

"To have Tiger be a part of this is just a tremendous asset for the foundation and the event," Begay said. "I think he enjoyed himself. He beat us, but I think we've kind of grown accustomed to that."

Just like a year ago, the first six holes were worth $10,000 apiece, the second six $20,000, holes 13 through 17 were worth $50,000 each, and No. 18 was worth $70,000.

Villegas won the inaugural event and seemed set to make it two in a row. After Woods birdied No. 8 to reach $80,000, the players halved the next five holes to boost the purse for No. 14 to $180,000.

Villegas hit his second shot at the 410-yard, par 4 to within 8 feet of the pin, then dropped to the turf in his spiderlike stance to study the line for the putt. After Woods' birdie try slid a foot past the pin and Weir's slid just left of the hole, Villegas calmly rolled his in.

Undaunted, Woods, the bottom of his gray pants wet from walking the soggy golf course, hit his second shot at the par-4 15th hole, a 442-yard dogleg, inside 10 feet of the pin and won the $50,000 hole.

With a stiff right-to-left wind blowing at they teed off at No. 16, Woods hit to 8 feet and curled in another birdie putt for another $50,000 as this three rivals failed to match him.

At No. 17, another par 4, after Villegas lipped out a 15-foot birdie putt and Weir missed again just left, Woods calmly sank the putt, a perfectly paced 12-footer for birdie.

The Richest Event Attraction

Maybe few of us have heard of The Zambia Open. But with R800,000 in prize money this year, it did raise our interest. It also attracted good golfers like Ian Woosnam, Sam Torrance, Christy O'Connor Jnr and Johan Edfors.

It's the richest event on the winter sector of the Sunshine Tour.

It has been part of the Sunshine Tour since 1996, and was co-sanctioned by the European Challenge Tour from 2001 to 2004. It was also an event on the Challenge Tour between 1991 and 1993, having previously been part of the now defunct Safari Tour.

With three Zambia Open champions in the field - defending champion Tyrone Ferreira, and former champions Steve Basson and Desvonde Botes - it's going to be a closely-contested affair, especially as the field also includes the likes of Brandon Pieters who is one of just two players on the Sunshine Tour this year to have won twice.

His victories came in the Vodacom Business Origins series events in Pretoria and George.

Ferreira claimed his maiden Sunshine Tour win in this event last year, handling the strong winds better than his pursuers to finish on eight-under 208 ahead of Charl Coetzee and Divan van den Heever.

Last year's tournament was held at Chainama Hills, and this year, it returns to Ndola Golf Club, the scene of Basson's second consecutive win. Botes also won at Ndola, but back in 1996.

Other players in good form ahead of the Zambia Open are Zimbabwean TC Charamba and South Africans Jbe' Kruger, Tyrone Mordt and Christiaan Basson.

They finished behind last week's Sunshine Tour winner Jaco van Zyl, who is not playing in Zambia this week after winning his third title in 2009 at the Telkom PGA Pro-Am.

Charamba was second with a strong closing round, with Kruger and Mordt sharing third. Basson shared fifth with Botes.

Sunshine Tour tournament director Gary Todd told Zambian media that the Tour valued the Zambia Open as an important event on its calendar and was always confident it would take place despite a postponement earlier in the year.

"We had a good event in 2008 and it is an achievement to host it again. What happened in March was a bit unfortunate and we would like to add more African events to the tour,", he said.

"We currently only have events in Swaziland, Namibia and Zambia."

The Story Behind Yang's Victory

If YE Yang's father had had his way, his son would never have played golf, let alone stunned the golfing world by beating their favourite son.

But going against all the wishes of his father, Yang Han-joon , a lowly vegetable farmer, YE Yang or Yang Yong-eun as he is known at home, left behind him a farmer's life and all the other sports he had played as a youth - baseball, basketball, soccer and volleyball - and at the impossibly late age of 19, picked up and hit, for the first time, a club (an iron) at the driving range of the posh country club where he worked at the low-paying job of collecting balls.

It seems he was immediately smitten. and started hitting hundreds of balls in the evening after the range had closed and all the patrons had gone, endlessly dreaming of becoming a professional golfer.

Father Yang was not impressed that his son, already an adult and long past the age where the great players like Tiger Woods had first had cut-down golf clubs thrust into their chubby. little boy's hands by eager parents, should even be thinking of trying to make a living in this sport of the wealthy.

"Golf is for rich people. Why are you trying to become a golfer? Please don't do it," Yang has recalled his father saying as he begged him not to pursue his newest passion.

But Yang was hooked.

He stuck to his guns and, ironically, today after his stunning defeat of the hot favourite Woods US PGA Championship at Hazeltine National, he has probably earned more in his short time since qualifying for the US Tour nine months ago ($3.2 million including his earnings of $1.35 million at Hazeltine).than his father has earned in an entire life time of farming.

What none of us knew, though, was that Yang had studied Tiger over and over for years and visualized a way of beating him that was brilliantly successful,

For while he was always the picture of calm and control heading down the closing stretch, Tiger looked very human indeed.

Yes Yang had confounded them all - including his once so doubtful father who is now happily ensconced at the luxury golf destination that is the Ora Country Club, on the resort island of Jeju with the Yang clan that now includes YE's wife and three sons.

Yang senior knows now he was wrong in trying to get YE to join him in the fields, telling Associated Press, "I had no idea what golf was. That's why I was opposed to it."

Yang's mother, Ko Hee-soon, felt differently. Her son was determined to leave their hard life of drudgery behind and she supported him.

"When we urged him to go into farming, he would say, 'I'm not going to live like my father,'" she remembers.

Golf coach Kim Won-jun, 43, is convinced that it is Yang's nerves of steel under pressure that put him head and shoulders above his peers.

"I personally know Yang, and what most distinguishes him from other players is his emotional stability," he said.

Yang is certainly not without emotion. The world saw that when he exploded with joy after he had sunk the winning putt on Sunday.

But, as his coach says: "He is in total control during the game, so when he has the chance, he is able to immediately seize it."

We are going to see a lot more of him still, especially now that he has so firmly planted the flag for the emerging Asian continent.

My Craziest Golf Story Ever(1)

I had two birdies on one hole the other day. Wasn't playing two balls. Didn't break any rules. So how did it happen? The following is a true story...

In need of a relaxing round of golf after covering the PGA Championship in Tulsa, Okla., all week, I played hooky on Tuesday, eschewing a day at the office in favor of a 9:40 a.m. tee time with my buddy Matt at Gillette Ridge Golf Club, an Arnold Palmer design in Bloomfield, Conn.

Playing from the gold tees -- not quite the tips, but still a pretty fair test at 6,703 yards -- I was my usual inconsistent self, making a par here, a double there, my body still in "crouched over laptop" mode after a week of live blogging. Don't tell anyone, but I think I even carded a "septy" at one point -- a score only Angel Cabrera could love.

I was just starting to find a groove when we got to the fun 13th hole, a 273-yard par-4 that bends right to left, the green bordered by a wide bunker to its front left side. I had honors on the tee and pulled out my 3-wood, as previous attempts at this tee shot proved that even a well-struck golf driver could land on the front of the green and hop all the way through to some nasty rough guarded by tall trees.

Surveying the hole, I felt about a 10 mph breeze at my back, tried to block out the greenside bunker I've found so often in the past and noticed three small birds -- sparrows, maybe -- walking down the left side of the fairway.

I teed the ball low, took a half-practice swing and told myself to keep the clubface open to prevent the inconvenient hook I've developed over the years. Feeling confident, I took my stance, pulled the club back and -- wouldn't you know it? -- hit a low, searing, hooking line drive that seemed destined to find the bunker until ... POW!

Feathers. Everywhere. It looked like the bird spontaneously combusted. Or just exploded. Or imploded. It was sort of like that video of the Kingdome being reduced to rubble, only if the entire building was made out of feathers.

"Oh my God, you just Randy Johnson-ed that thing!" Matt screamed. He was right. Much like the spring training fastball that found an errant bird a few years back, my drive found this little guy like a heat-seeking missile. When the ball made contact, it had yet to hit the ground, instead nailing the bird where it should have found the short grass. After a few more exclamations of, "Holy s---!" and "No f------ way!" from each of us, Matt let 'er rip from the tee (left of the bunker, in the short rough, no animals harmed) and we hopped in the cart, ready to confirm our suspicions.

Overview

The Barclays is the first event in the FedEx Cup Playoffs featuring the top 125 players from the season long FedExCup points list including eight of the top ten players in the world.

Next week the top 100 golfers will go on to the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston. The following week the top 70 players will progress to the BMW Championship in Chicago.

After a two week break the final 30 players atop the FedEx Cup points list will fight it out at the Tour Championship in Atlanta where a $10,000,000 prize fund awaits the winner. Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh won the first two FedEx Cups.

Westchester Country Club was home to the Barclays from 1967-2007. Last year the event was held at Ridgewood Country Club and this year it moves to Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey.

Last Time Out

Vijay Singh collected a tournament record fourth career victory last year at Ridgewood Country Club with a sudden death playoff win, defeating Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland.

At the first playoff hole Singh made a do or die birdie putt after Garcia sank his birdie attempt and Sutherland was eliminated. Singh two putted for birdie on the second playoff hole to capture the title.

In his three previous title defences of the Barclays Singh withdrew in 1994, finished tied for 20th in 1996 and missed the cut in 2007.

Course

The Liberty National course was designed by 1992 U.S. Open winner Tom Kite and Bob Cupp and opened for play in 2006. Tom Kite also designed the Trump International Golf Club, home to this year's Puerto Rico Open presented by Banco Popular.

The par 71 course can play as long as 7,419 yards. It sits alongside the Hudson River with views of Manhattan two miles away and the Statue of Liberty less than 1,000 yards from the 18th green.

Liberty National is a unique style of golf course. With over 5000 trees there are some holes which give it parkland course look but other holes which run alongside the river give it a Scottish links feel.

The course features undulating fairways well protected by bunkers, long wispy bluegrass rough in places and small greens with multiple run off areas.

Weather

Forecast is good for Thursday and Friday with unsettled weather due over the weekend with a 40% chance of thunderstorms.

Conclusion

A new course for all the players and one that should test all the golf clubs in their bag. The players will need to shape the ball off the tee and distance will be an advantage this year as recent rain has left the course playing soft and the ball is not rolling out. When to Use What Drivers

Driver is the club that will provide you with a longer shot than wedges, irons or woods. A driver can only be used when teeing off on a hole. You don't necessarily have to use a driver when teeing off, however. Because there are many drivers from which to choose it is important that you know when to use what kind of drivers.

Longer Holes

Par 4 and Par 5 holes are two of your longest yardage holes so it's important to use a long driver. Long drivers with a more flexible shaft are preferable because you can get more power behind a swing. Typically long drivers will have a heavier head.

Medium Holes

These consist of par 3 or the shorter par 4. There is no particular name for the medium-range drivers; they are simply referred to as drivers. Check the shafts for stability. A medium-range driver should have a stiffer staff, but not completely stiff. Stiffer shafts are heavier, which in turn doesn't allow you to put as much speed on the swing.

Hybrid Drivers

There are drivers that have the characteristics of a medium-range driver and a long driver. Some of these clubs will have a stiffer shaft and a wider head, or some will have a very flexible shaft and medium-sized head. Some golfers use these drivers to take the guess work out of selecting a club to use. These drivers can be used on any hole. You will need to adjust the swing speed.

Former Ryder Cup player Thomas Bjorn returns to the European Tour this week after undergoing a brain scan and "every test imaginable".

The Dane, chairman of the players' committee and captain of Continental Europe against Britain and Ireland in next month's Vivendi Trophy in Paris, admits he has been a worried man these past few weeks after suffering dizzy spells and extreme fatigue.

"They found a brain, but nothing else," Bjorn was able to joke on the eve of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

He has not played since the French Open at the start of last month and Wednesday's pro-am was his first round since then.

"It started in France and after going to Loch Lomond for the Scottish Open the following week I felt so bad that hitting balls for 10 minutes felt like 10 hours.

"It just drained me completely, so I pulled out and went home.

"For two weeks I hardly got out of bed and when I got the dizzy attacks I was sleeping for 15-16 hours a day.

"They can't figure it out yet, but you start at the top and work down, so I was sent for the brain scan.

"You think really bad things and going for the scan and then waiting for the result is not the greatest feeling, but it was all clear.

"It could be a lifestyle thing. The changes in food and environment and all the travelling we do has got to take more out of you than you realise and sometimes I suppose you can just hit the wall.

"It's a shame because I was starting to hit the ball well again. Now I'm hitting it awful, but that's to be expected a bit after going so long without playing.

"You can't just keep sitting at home, though, so I'm here and I've entered the next two tournaments as well."

"Winning today is awesome, especially since it was such a hard-fought battle, " she said after the match.

"That was kind of our good-luck corner, and it was loud in that corner, too.

The lower your score, the more points you receive, and the golfer with the most points wins.The Stableford system is a popular format at golf clubs and for charity outings. The system tends to benefit higher-handicap players because a very high score on a hole is not penalized with negative points. Below is a stableford score.

First you need to know your course handicap. Use your USGA handicap index to get the conversion to the course handicap. Ask the golf professional if you need help. Once you have the course handicap you need to figure out your adjusted par. If your handicap is 18, then you will add 1 stroke to par each hole to get your adjusted par. Say you are a 10 handicap, then you will add 1 stroke to par on the 10 hardest handicap holes to get your adjusted par.

Before starting the round, write your adjusted par on the scorecard to prevent later confusion. After every hole fill in your gross (non-adjusted) score and any points you may have earned in the box below your score.

Decide on the point system. New G15 – a truly worthy successor

It is hard to believe that Ping could come up with something to better the rightly popular Ping G10 driver but they have come up trumps with the new G15 – a truly worthy successor. I have been lucky enough to already get to try out the new Ping clubs and I have not been disappointed. A big fan of the G10 I was dubious if I would feel the need to upgrade to this newer version but everything from looks to performance has convinced me that a good club has got even better. The club sits behind the ball very well and is visually confidence building – the half crescent alignment system has been slightly modified in the G15 to look slightly more modern and fit in with then new red colour scheme – giving a solid look to address. The 460cc head still looks like a driver should do (I think it is slightly deeper at the back than the G10) and the club is extremely well balanced. In terms of performance it cannot be faulted – a solid feel and good sound at impact translate into a penetrating and long ball flight with impressive forgiveness on off centre hits.

Titleist is replacing every iron in their set with the new AP1, AP2, ZB, and ZM irons. Gone are the well-liked 695 (in CB and MB variations). Gone is the 735.CM. Gone are the 755s and the 775s. Five models are being replaced by four, three of which are forged, and one of which aims to bring incredible feel and performance to the "aspiring golfer" crowd.

They say there's no accounting for taste, but my own personal opinion is that the irons offer a nifty throw-back look. I don't personally care for the "overdone" graphics we see on a lot of clubs, and I'm willing to say that the Titleist AP1 and Titleist AP2 come close to overdoing it a little. The lines don't bother me - in fact, I like the lines - but the black/grey and black/red striping and the words in that area are what push the iron close to the edge for me. And this isn't the first time Titleist has "dressed up" up the backs of their irons. The very 755 and 775 irons these clubs replace also had decorative backs with different colors, materials, and lettering.

The introduction of the AP1 and the AP2 mark a bold step for Titleist: tungsten sole weights, flashier graphics, and elastomer cushions are all new to their irons. I've played Titleist irons for quite a long time, always going with the muscleback variations or, on occasion, blended sets.

History

In 1990 the Solheim family created the first International professional team event for ladies, modelled on the Ryder cup. It is held biennially between the top lady professionals from the United States and Europe.

The American team won the inaugural event at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Orland, Florida. Since then the Americans have dominated the competition leading the Europeans by seven victories to three. Once again the Americans retain the trophy at the Rich Harvest Farms Course in Illinois this week.

Format

The Solheim Cup is a match play event with a total of 28 points available. Each team fields 12 players. The format has changed this year and on Friday morning there are four rounds of fourballs followed in the afternoon by four rounds of foursomes. The same format is played on the Saturday before the final 12 points are decided in a round of singles in which all 24 players take part.

A Unique Story Behind The Name

The competition is named after Karsten Solheim the founder and driving force behind Ping. It all began as a quest to create a better golf putter to improve his golf game and it is 50 years since he filed for a patent for his first creation. He worked by day as an engineer for General Electric and by night designed golf putters in his garage with his sons Allan and John.

He spent endless hours around putting greens attempting to get top players to try his new putter. I've been reading a little bit about TW's attitude on the last day of the PGA Championship and found that people had commented that Tiger was quite arrogant, not to mention unprofessional in the way he played with Yang. 2 incidents mentioned were:

1. Tiger stepping on Yang's putting line at the 18th when he was preparing for his chip from the green-side rough.

2. Tiger walking off the green after he putts but before Yang putts out his hole.

I'll need to go back and see the recording again but I do recall incident #2. At that point, I felt it odd that Tiger had walked off while Yang hadn't finished the hole. I guess Tiger just wanted to press ahead.

That said, if the above are true (and Tiger has been for his arrogance), then I don't feel so bad for his loss at the PGA Championship. In fact, I think that this is a good reality check for him and other pros that there are good golfers out there who you may not have heard much of but can kick b*tt nonetheless. Sometimes, people get too comfortable at top positions that they fail to recognize the people around them.OR... was Tiger simply frustrated with himself and was not conscious of his actions?

I'd like to say something in defense of every person who's ever called the major tournament which currently resides between the U.S. Open and the P.G.A. Championship "The British Open." And in so doing mildly challenge people who rush to "correct" such speach.

I get that you Brits named your tournament "The Open" more than a hundred years ago. I don't know, maybe it was the only "Open" on earth at the time. That's certainly not the case today.
Today, the name "Open" is part of the title of the U.S. Open, French Open, Irish Open, Senior British Open, U.S. Senior Open, and who knows how many others.

It's fair to say that when speaking about any one of these tournaments, one might on occasion abbreviate its title and call it "the Open". Hence, someone calling The British Open "British" is a sometimes useful qualifier to avoid confusion. Jumping to "correct" such a speaker serves no one. And it makes you seem a bit fussy. Further, there is no way of telling whether the offending speaker, in saying, "The British Open" means that as an incorrect title for that tournament or rather means, "The open which is held in Great Britain".

You guys invented the English language. I thank you for that. Let's all enjoy using it in a clear manner.

Heck, sometimes I have a hard enough time figuring out what someone means when they say something about "The U.S. Open", because it's not necessarily clear whether they're talking tennis or golf.

Advantages of A Short Hitter In his later years Runyan liked to say that short hitters have a few advantages over long hitters. For example, short hitters hit into fewer hazards off the tee. But that type of thinking, says Runyan, gets you in trouble, if miss the fairway.

Paul Casey, who has been battling a rib injury for the last month, says he will decide Thursday morning whether or not to try to play in the 91st PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club.

Casey is scheduled to go off at 8:45 a.m. Eastern Thursday; if he can't go, he would be replaced by fifth alternate Tim Petrovic.

The winner of three early-season tournaments in 2009, including the PGA Tour's Shell Houston Open in a playoff, Casey moved to No. 3 in the World Ranking. But his year in the majors has been forgettable. He finished T20 at the Masters and missed the cut at the U.S. Open before hurting himself while hitting a shot in preparation for the British Open at Turnberry last month. He played through it and finished T47.

After taking time off to heal, Casey aggravated the injury while trying to hit out of the rough at last week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio, and withdrew after six holes.

"There's really nothing much you can do for it except rest," he said after getting treatment for the second time Wednesday. He had not played a single hole of a practice round, but at least he knows the course. He played the 2002 PGA here (85-74), missing the cut, and the 1999 NCAA Championship, where he finished 4th, six shots behind winner Luke Donald. Casey spent some time Wednesday afternoon going over the signatures on the field list that week, which is framed and hangs just outside the locker room.

Lucas Glover played that week, as did several others in the field for this PGA.

"We had some really good players in that era," Casey said.

I'll be stunned if Tiger Woods doesn't win the PGA Championship, and I've got a feeling it's not going to be all that close. (I'm not jumping on the Tiger bandwagon; through 70 PGA Tour victories, I've never gotten off.)

Woods has only had three major-less seasons since he turned pro in 1997, and his game seems honed to a fine edge. Last weekend's 65-65 finish gave him his seventh career win at Firestone, and he seemed to be in complete control of the ball for most of the final two rounds. Historically, it's been a pretty easy call to make — when Tiger plays near his best, he wins. It's as simple as that. He's won five times this year, including four of his last six appearances. At what point do you acknowledge that whatever he's doing, it's working?

The decision came two days after Tiger Woods won the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich. Woods acknowledged the end of the tournament, which he won for the third time, by heaving his golf ball toward a massive gallery after his final putt.

The additional blow came with the end of the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines, where Woods has won a record six times. The Buick Invitational is among the top tournaments in the early part of the PGA Tour schedule because it typically is the first event on network TV and has the highest TV rating because of Woods.

“While this is disappointing news, both the PGA Tour and Buick remain in discussions regarding future sponsorship possibilities,” Buick and the tour said in a statement.

The Buick Open will be replaced on the schedule next year by a new tournament at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, according to two officials with knowledge of the deal. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the tour does not plan to announce the new event until Wednesday. Golfweek was the first to report on The Greenbrier getting a tournament.

Keep Your Eye On The Ball, Improve Your Golf Score

You hear this mantra in every sport – keep your eye on the ball! It’s a perfect chant for the golf player at every turn. If you can’t see the ball clearly, your chances of hitting it are slim to none!

When you look at the ball, you want to keep your eyes on one spot. Don’t look at your club to see if it’s squared to the ball. Don’t let your eye follow the club as you draw it away Just focus on the ball – nothing else.

Also, when you look at the ball, try to get a bird’s eye view of it. Your eyes are about a foot above the pivotal center so raising your shoulders isn’t going to help you see the ball better. Don’t gaze at the ball along the line of the shaft of your club. Look down on the ball rather than get your angles along the shaft. This will give you much better results and you won’t have a tendency to look up too soon.

Now, there’s a natural tendency in everyone to look away when you start to draw the club back. Ignore that tendency and just keep looking down on top of the ball.

When you’re looking down you’ll notice that (if you’re leaning over properly) the only way you can keep the club head in the line of flight is to keep your hands moving along parallel with that line. Sweep your hands along with the club head while the ball and head are in contact.

Mastering the skill of seeing the ball clearly until you hit it is true of every kind of shot. Whether the ball is in long grass, on an up or down slope, no matter what’s around you -the main thing is to see the ball clearly to hit it accurately.

Very few golfers stand still when looking at the ball and concentrate their attention on seeing the ball clearly. A lot of the times people will give a glance in the direction they want the ball to go, then they look back at the ball. Many golfers would be shocked to find out that they don’t stand still and keep their eye on the ball. The second your gaze shifts from the ball during any part of the swing, problems occur.

Really, a lack of concentration is responsible for most golfing mistakes. You can hit the ball well when you can clearly see the ball at every point in your swing from start to finish.

Kang earns stroke play medal at US Women's Amateur

Danielle Kang, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., rolled in a 30-foot par putt at the 18th hole to earn stroke-play medalist honors Tuesday by one shot at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.

Kang's putt capped off a 3-under round of 68 for a 36-hole total of 4-under 138 on the 6,422-yard, par-71 layout at Old Warson Country Club. The 16-year-old Kang edged Marina Alex, 19, of Wayne, N.J., and 16-year-old Jessica Korda of Bradenton, Fla.

Alex and Korda, both finished at 3-under 139.

Kang, competing in her second Women's Amateur and sixth USGA championship, registered seven birdies and four bogeys. The round included three consecutive birdies from No. 12.

"I'm excited," Kang said. "My dad was like, 'Let's get medalist today.' I wanted to accomplish something for making match play."

Korda's 4-under-par 67 tied for the lowest round of the championship with 17-year-old Sun Gyoung Park of Vail, Ariz., who finished fourth at 140 after a 67 on Tuesday.

First-round leader Amy Anderson, 17, of Oxbow, N.D., had a 75 and finished at 1-over 143. The newly minted U.S. Girls' Junior champion was bidding to become the third player in USGA history to earn medalist honors in the Girls' Junior and Women's Amateur in the same year.

The incoming North Dakota State freshman still has a chance to become the first player to win both titles in the same year.

The match-play cut was at 9-over 151, with six golfers playing off for the final spot. Amelia Lewis, 18, of Jacksonville, Fla., was the survivor.

Sixty-four golfers will begin match play on Wednesday morning, leading up to the 36-hole final on Sunday.

Ping i10 or G10 iron set for me

So went to the local golf joint to get fit for a new set of ping irons. I'm having trouble deciding which to buy.I'm about an 18 handicap, sort of a repectable beginner looking to improve a great deal in the next few years. I'm left handed so they only had a 7 iron of each club for me to hit into a net. I hit the G10 pure everytime, the i10 i could feel a little mishit now and then, but knew for sure when i hit one on the screws.im playing the largest clubs known to man, the big bertha 05' irons, so even the g10 is smaller than im used to.bottom line is i want one of these sets BAD now...they both felt great to hit.The club fitter guy said the g10 for sure. just easier to hit and no real down side when compared to i10.

my thoughts:

G10 - for sure would enjoy them right away, but wouldn't force me improve my ball striking over time. might outgrow them in a few years.i10 - more mishits, may struggle to adjust at the beginning, but would assist me to become a better golfer over time.I would not out grow them for a number of years. could learn to work the ball both ways without fighting a huge offset (can draw big berthas very easy, difficult to hit a cut).i'm 50/50 at this point. any thoughts? it wouldn't be the end of the world to buy g10s and sell them in a couple/three years and move to more of a player iron at that time.

OK... so let's see if I've got this correct. You haven't touched your golf clubs since that last warm day last fall, and you really haven't "practiced" since who knows when, and now that the PGA Tour is making it's way from Hawaii to the west coast, YOU ARE GETTING THE GOLF BUG... AGAIN !

Now that you've started watching these guys on TV make playing the game look SO easy, you can't wait to get back out there yourself. Before you do anything rash... watch the pros carefully, see how "thoughtful" they are before they hit each shot. Then they stop thinking and go into "play the shot mode" which I am going to contend is a right brain function. That is when they are PLAYING well. Yes the emphasis is on PLAYING... not THINKING. Try to remember the last good round you had, not a par round necessarily, but a good round of golf for you. You were undoubtedly just enjoying the day or the company of your friends or the golf course, or all of the above. The point is you weren't TRYING to play well you just were. Golf, as well as life, is more about being present than it is about anything else. And patience is always a virtue.

We, as a species, tend to think way too much at the times we should just be executing the shot we wish to play. Think all you have to, to come to a decision as to how to make the shot you are playing. Think of the risks and the rewards. Think of the type of lie you have and how much wind you have to play for. Think about and be confident about your club selection...then take aim and fire away. When it's time to fire... stop thinking... just be aware.

Back to watching the "big boys". Notice that none of them are swinging HARD when they are playing well. Heck, you'll rarely see ANY of them EVER swing with what appears to be any effort. Tiger has been prone to "let 'er rip" way too frequently from my perspective over the last few seasons. Whether he was frustrated that his swing mechanics weren't in order yet from making changes, or his timing was just simply off, you had to be visually impaired to not notice how hard he was swinging at times. And at those times he was not scoring any where near his potential. Whenever he is playing his best and is lapping the field he has a more noticeable fluidity to his timing and tempo than when he is "off" his game. Except for the times that the pros ARE making a swing change, they are basically focusing on their timing and their tempo. Their swings don't really change from a Thursday to a Sunday. What may change and sometimes does very noticeably is the thought process of some players. When ANY of the pros on tour are scoring well they aren't focused on anything but the present. As simple as that sounds. It isn't necessarily that easy to do at times. Jack Nicklaus was the best of the best for the longest duration of time. His mind was the best "CLUB" in his bag, or should I say, in his game. He believes that PATIENCE was the thing that separated all of the good golfers from all of the great ones.

Kids Basics For Golf

When introducing kids to golf, you need to keep FUN as the main goal. If you throw in all of the rules and all of the golf talk, then you will make it boring and they will not enjoy it. If you allow a child to enjoy playing golf, then they will grow to love it forever!

Making a child practice for hours and hours will quickly overwhelm a child. Let them practice for small amounts of time, such as 30 minutes, at first. This will help them stay motivated to practice.

Let them hit the ball hard at first. This will make it fun for them. Don’t stress about the correct grip when they are just beginning. Just show them how to keep the right hand under the left hand and let them swing away!

Also, encourage them to keep their feet on the ground during their follow through.

If you want to purchase a child’s set of golf clubs, that is okay, but a used set of women’s clubs will work just as well. They are light and will work great for kids. You only need a woman’s 6 iron, 9 iron, 3 wood, and a putter to start.

Let your child start by playing games chipping and putting. This will allow them to get the feel of the club and the ball. Kids will enjoy bouncing the ball off the wedge to try to hit leaves or twigs.

To keep them motivated, you might want to try some fun contests and games. You will want to avoid pressuring them too early. Allowing your child to enjoy the game will make them want to play instead getting frustrated and quitting.

Encourage your child and they will enjoy playing with you. If you start demanding them to win or overemphasizing competition, then will lose their interest in golf very fast.

Children will progress when they are ready to. If you will let them do this at their own pace, you can help prevent burnout. Don’t force a child to play golf. Playing golf should be fun and full of enjoyment. Have fun with them and playing golf!

If your child really seems to be interested in golf, then you may want to consider golf lessons or a golf camp especially for children. If you want a private instructor, make sure that you watch them teach children first. You want someone that will encourage your child and that is good at teaching children.

If is very important to teach your child golf etiquette. Teach them that it is not acceptable to talk when someone else is swinging. Stand still. Don’t walk in front of someone swinging. Don’t walk in front of someone’s line or through their line.

Don’t criticize them. Praise the shots and swings that they make. Encourage them in the correct methods, but don’t dwell on their incorrect shots.

Golf Flexibility Is A Key Component For Senior Golfers

Golf flexibility is a common term among senior golfers. Most senior golfers know they have a declining level of golf flexibility and distance. But why then do most of them not participate in a golf flexibility program?

If you are in this group of golfers, do you walk off the course frustrated with your performance? Are you dissatisfied with your driving distance? Do you seem to have a hard time repeating a good swing for 18 holes?

The answer is right in front of you!

It is a known fact to hit the ball maximum yardage you need a certain level of golf flexibility that will generate clubhead speed and power at impact. This level is such that a golfer can rotate approximately 90 degrees with his upper body, and only 45 degrees with his lower body creating the “x-factor” for top level distances.

It is impossible to do this at a certain age unless you maintain a consistent golf flexibility routine in your daily activities. Muscles that are not used (and/or stretched) lose elasticity and the ability to produce power.

Along with this loss of elasticity is a rapid decline in strength. The results are subpar performances and a lower level of enjoyment of the game. This is why we see so many golfers quitting the game.

Golf flexibility doesn’t have to be a complicated issue. You don’t need fancy, expensive equipment to do an effective routine that will produce the results you want. But you do have to be aware of your specific limitations and what areas you should focus on to maximum your time investment.

Doing a golf fitness evaluation to determine your weak areas is crucial. You’ve got to have some idea of what is keeping you from a better game. Once you determine your personal limitations, you can do some simple golf flexibility exercises to greatly improve this situation.

It’s amazing to see how quickly the senior golfer can see improvement. I’ve seen some dramatic numbers with the golfers of my membership site and customers of my dvds and manual. The emails I receive are so motivating; I ask permission to insert them on my websites as success stories.

Ninety percent of golf is mental. Oh heck, make that 95%! Arnold Palmer stated, “The toughest 6 inches in the game of golf is between a player’s ears”.

Most golfers tend to think they must practice more, find a new instructor, buy more videos, get the swing right, change those golf clubs. But one of the often overlooked and most important mental aspects of the game is focus.

Now you want to make sure you focus on the result you want. In golf the shot is determined by your level of concentration. You’ve likely just rushed right in and played shots without concentrating. No wonder the ball ended up going haywire!

It’s better to make ten focused swings than 100 quick, thoughtless ones. Your swing will naturally break down when you’re fatigued. So be sure to take a break when you’re practicing. Brain breaks give your mind and body a chance to implement what you’re learning.

One way to practice the art of focusing is to light a candle and stare into the flame, only thinking of the flame. Every time your mind starts to move to any other thought, bring it back to the flame. Think of the dancing orange colors, how they melt inside of each other.

Tiger Woods, the Greatest ever? ?NOT!!

If you look at the 11 win gap between Jack’s 70 total victories and Sam’s 81 and then figure Sam’s total of 165 victories he claims, no one even comes close. Sorry Jack. Now figure in the shape of the courses today, the equipment and the level of competition and there is no doubt in my mind that Sammy is the man. Keep in mind, Sam played against, Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan -- all born the same year - they were considered the era's Big Three. Hogan amassed 63 total wins and Nelson won 52, putting both of them in the top 5 of the all time winners list. Does anyone really thing that Tiger’s best competition today, is going to end up in that illustrious group? I think not.

Statically speaking there is a large gap between the top of the all time winners list that not even the great Walter Hagen bridges. Hagen, in 7th place with 40 wins, is eleven short of the 6th placeholder, Billy Casper. Eleven wins is an entire career for even a great player on the tour today. Again I ask you to look at the gap between number 2 on the list, Jack Nicklaus and Number 1, Sam Snead, eleven wins.

Even if you are the most vehement “Tigernite” or Nicklaus Nut, you have to admit, the real all time golf elite includes only a very few, 6 to be exact: Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Byron Nelson and Billy Casper. And Billy Casper gets my vote for the greatest player with the least recognition, by far.

Now I’m going to really tick you Tigernites off. My money says he never gets there. (However, I’m not betting the really big money) Why? I think he runs out of desire. The bigger he gets, the closer he gets, the more he wins, the more the pressure will build. If he has shown any weakness at all, it is his temper that occasionally gets the best of him. As the pressures mount, and with the glare of the media of today, it will, I think that pressure will sooner or later wear him down. No, I’m not predicting he will go “postal” and toss a camera in a lake with the owner still attached, but I think the “fire in the belly” will dime. And if I am right, it will be a travesty to lose, not the greatest that ever played, but one of the greatest, that could have toppled ”the” Greatest Player That Ever Lived, Sam Snead!

Professional golfer Tripp Isenhour is expected to enter a plea on charges of intentionally killing an endangered hawk after the hawk just wouldn't shut its trapper on the golf course.

Isenhour entered a written plea of not guilty in March. The 40-year-old is charged with animal cruelty and killing a migratory bird. He's accused of hitting a hawk with a golf shot at the Grand Cypress Golf Club in Orlando when the bird's loud chirps interrupted the filming of an instructional video.

"We've all had our eruptions on the golf course, and I'm pretty sure we all will again before we're covered with dirt, but to do it when filming an instructional video. " Really, Tripp? You're filming a video to help people and you get mad enough to kill a bird? That is some deep, rich hatred my friends.

The charges carry a combined 14 months in jail and $1,500 in fines.

Valhalla to stage 2014 US PGA

Valhalla Golf Club, scene of last year's US Ryder Cup victory over Europe, is to stage the 2014 US PGA Championship, the PGA of America announced on Thursday night.

The Louisville, Kentucky course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1986, was also named as the venue for the 2011 US Senior PGA Championship.

Valhalla staged last September's Ryder Cup, when Paul Azinger's USA team ended a nine-year winless streak with a 16.5 to 11.5 victory over Nick Faldo's Europeans.

Both of the two US PGA Championships held there have also produced drama, ending in play-offs. In 1996, Mark Brooks defeated Kentucky's Kenny Perry, while in 2000, Tiger Woods defeated Bob May.

"There is no debate that something special happens whenever Valhalla Golf Club hosts a major championship," PGA of America President Jim Remy said.

"And there is no question that the golf fans of Kentucky have responded, making Valhalla one of the greatest homes of championship golf.

"We are very pleased that we can bring back a Senior PGA Championship in two years' time and add a third PGA Championship to the great history of this club.

"We anticipate another tremendous show of support from fans in Louisville, Kentucky and the surrounding cities and states in welcoming the world's premier players."

The 2009 US PGA, the 91st staging of the championship, will be played in two weeks' time at Hazeltine National in Chaska, Minnesota, visiting Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, in 2010, Atlanta Athletic Club, Georgia (2011), Kiawah Island, South Carolina (2012) and Oak Hill, New York (2013) before reaching Valhalla.
